Hunt to Heal follows Omar "Crispy" Avila, a retired U.S. Army veteran whose time outdoors became part of a deeper path toward recovery, purpose, and peace. His story is not simply about hunting. It is about what can happen when someone finds belonging in a place that lets them breathe again.

For Omar, the outdoors offered something he had been searching for after combat injuries changed the course of his life. A single invitation to hunt became a turning point, eventually leading him to help other disabled veterans and Gold Star Families experience the same kind of connection.

Serving Our Country

Omar Avila joined the U.S. Army in 2004 and deployed to Iraq in 2007. On May 24 of that year, his convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device, leaving him with burns over much of his body and requiring the amputation of his right leg below the knee.

The physical injuries were life changing, but Omar's story did not end there. After retiring from the Army in 2010, he committed himself to recovery and refused to let injury define what the rest of his life could become.

Hunt to Heal is a story of resilience, but it is also a reminder that recovery is not always linear. Sometimes the next step begins with simply saying yes.

A Quest for Healing

Omar worked through the physical demands of rehabilitation, but he was also searching for something quieter: peace, connection, and a way to feel grounded again. He wanted the natural world to play a role in his healing, not just another prescription or another routine.

When a friend invited him on a hunting trip, Omar accepted. The night before the hunt, doubt set in. He questioned whether he belonged there and whether the people in camp would accept him. Still, his gear was packed, his alarm went off, and within minutes he was on the road.

The First Hunt

As Omar left the city and drove toward the countryside, something started to shift. The farther he got from noise and traffic, the more he felt a sense of calm return. By the time he reached the lodge, the anxiety had softened into anticipation.

When he arrived, he was met by a hunter in a wheelchair with no legs. In that moment, Omar felt something he had not expected: immediate acceptance. He was not an outsider in camp. He was among people who understood far more than they needed to explain.

For Omar, the hunt began before a rifle was ever shouldered. It began with the realization that he was welcome.

The Campfire Conversation

That night, Omar could not sleep. He walked outside to a fire pit and found another hunter sitting there. The two began talking, first casually, then more honestly. The man asked Omar how he was doing. When Omar answered on the surface, the man pressed deeper and asked about his mental health.

It was one of the first times Omar truly opened up about what he was carrying. Later, he learned the man at the fire was Chris Kyle. That conversation stayed with him because it reached past introductions and into the kind of honesty that can only happen when someone asks the right question at the right time.

The Hunt That Changed Everything

The next morning, Chris told Omar that they were hunting together. When a buck finally stepped out, Omar steadied himself, controlled his breathing, and took the shot. It was his first deer, and it became far more than a successful hunt.

That experience changed the way Omar saw the outdoors. Hunting became a way to reconnect with himself, with other people, and with a part of life that still felt open. What began as uncertainty became a source of purpose.

  • Connection: Camp gave Omar a place where he felt accepted without explanation.
  • Confidence: The hunt helped rebuild trust in his ability to take on hard things.
  • Purpose: The experience became something Omar wanted to share with others.

From Passion to Peace

Omar became hooked on hunting, but the deeper story is what he chose to do with it. Today, he brings friends, disabled veterans, and Gold Star Families into the field so they can experience the same kind of quiet, honest space that helped him.

Christensen Arms was honored to partner with Omar on the Hunt to Heal documentary. His story reflects a deep respect for the sacrifices made by members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, as well as the restorative power that the outdoors can hold.

The Bottom Line

Hunt to Heal is about more than one hunt. It is about service, recovery, mentorship, and the way the outdoors can create room for conversations that change lives.

Omar Avila's story is a reminder that healing can begin in unexpected places: on the road out of town, beside a campfire, behind a rifle, or in the quiet that comes after choosing to show up.

For Omar, hunting became more than an escape. It became a way back to peace, purpose, and people.
